Copper Gutter Hanger Shanks

A Gutter hanger shank is used in conjunction with a Circle hanger as part of a two piece half round gutter hanging system. The Circle holds the half round gutter and the Shank is used to mount the system to a variety of structural applications. The Shank serves as the “attachment point” between your gutter system and the supporting structure (ie: the fascia boarding, crown molding, etc). Shanks provide stability and support to the gutter, ensuring proper alignment and secure positioning overall.

Copper gutter hanger shanks come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different installation methods and architectural features of buildings.

Gutter Supply Copper Hanger Shank Products

#6 Shank - For Ogee or Crown Molding

The #6 Copper Shank is designed for mounting half round gutters to ogee or crown molding (which must be properly mounted to fascia or rafter tails). This type of shank provides a secure and reliable hold and comes in sizes suitable for 5” and 6” half round gutters. To install, the shank should be screwed through the crown molding and directly into the fascia or rafter tails. For installation, screws as long as 6" may be necessary.

#10 - For Straight Fascia

The #10 Shank provides a strong and stable hold for gutters mounted to flat fascia boards. The #10 Shank is nut and bolted to a 5” or 6” circle hanger, supporting the gutter from underneath, and should be attached to the fascia board with screws. The recommended spacing for brackets is every 16” to 32" depending on snow loads (space more closely together for heavier snow).

#11 Shank - For Exposed Rafters

The #11 Copper Shank is designed for mounting to exposed rafters, providing a sturdy and secure mounting solution for copper half round gutters. It mounts the hanger assembly to the side of the rafter tails, where no fascia board or crown molding is present. The shank should be screwed to the rafter tail so it is perpendicular to the ground. Just as with every shank, the #11 must be used in conjunction with a circle hanger.

#12 Shank - For Sheeting - 4/12 Pitch

The #12 Shank attaches half round gutters to sheeting with a 4/12 pitch, providing a secure and stable hold. This shank is similar to the #25 Shank, with the only difference being the angles of the roof pitch in which they are attached.

#25 Shank - For Sheeting - 6/12 Pitch

Featuring pre-drilled holes for easy screw or bolt attachment to the roof, the #25 Shank is used for installing half round gutter systems on 6/12 pitch roofs. Designed to attach directly to roof sheathing with circle hangers, this shank can be bent in a vice to accommodate a variety of roof pitches.

#30 Shank - For Adjustable Pitch Rafters and Angled Fascia

The #30 Shank is a great option for mounting half round gutters to angled fascia or angled rafter tails. Designed to adjust to the desired angle while keeping your gutters adjacent to the ground, this shank is an excellent choice for contractors looking for a reliable support system. A highly durable option, the #30 Shank provides a strong and stable hold, even in areas with heavy rain or snowfall.

Extension Shank

Extension Shanks are designed to be used in conjunction with another shank when the roof pitch is more than 6/12. The Extension Shank allows your gutter systems to hang low enough so the outer top edge is below the extended roof. The Extension Shank provides a simple and effective solution for gutters that need to be extended away from the house.

Copper Circle Hanger w/ Spring Clip, Nut and Bolt

Copper Circle Hangers are used in conjunction with shanks to secure the gutter in place. Circle hangers come with a spring clip, nut, and bolt that securely fastens the gutter to the shank. They are available for 5” and 6” half round gutter systems.

Copper Gutter Hanger Shanks Installation

Though the exact installation process will vary by product (see Assembly Illustrations), here is a general step-by-step overview for installing hanger shanks:

  1. Locate the installation points. Determine the spacing and placement of the gutter hanger shanks along the length of the gutter run. Typically, hangers are spaced approximately 24 to 36 inches apart, but this can vary depending on factors such as the slope of the roof and the expected weight load on the gutter.
  2. Mark the installation points. Use a pencil or marker to mark the locations where the hanger shanks will be installed on the fascia board, roof deck, crown molding or rafter tails.  Ensure that the marks are level and aligned with the bottom edge of the gutter.
  3. Pre-drill holes (if necessary). Using a drill with an appropriate drill bit size, pre-drill pilot holes at each marked installation point.
  4. Attach hanger shanks. Position the hanger shanks over the holes, ensuring that they are aligned with the marks. Use screws to secure the hanger shanks.
  5. Secure the gutter. Once all the hanger shanks are installed, attach the circles to the shanks. Ensure that the circles are installed in the proper holes that will allow the gutter to drain. We recommend pitching the gutter a ¼” every 10 feet.  The gutter must be properly sloped towards the downspout.
  6. Test for stability. After the gutter is in place, test the stability by gently pressing down on different sections of the gutter. Ensure that the hanger shanks securely support the weight of the gutter without any sagging or movement.

FAQs

Can Half Round Gutter Hangers be used as K-Style Hangers?

No. Half-round gutter hangers and K-style gutter hangers are specifically designed for their respective gutter types and are not interchangeable.

What is the spacing for Copper Gutter Hangers?

The spacing for copper gutter hangers typically ranges between 24 to 36 inches apart along the length of the gutter run.

What is the difference between gutter hangers and fasteners?

Gutter hangers support and stabilize the gutter system by attaching it to the building's fascia board or rafters. Fasteners are used to secure various components of the gutter system together. While gutter hangers provide primary support, fasteners ensure the components remain securely in place.

How do I choose the right Copper Gutter Hanger Shank for my gutter system?

To choose the right Copper Gutter Hanger Shank for your gutter system, consider factors such as the size of your gutter, your roofline (ie: angled fascia versus crown molding), and any specific installation requirements. Assess the pitch of your roof, the material of your fascia board, and the environmental conditions in your area. For questions about our gutter products, reach out to the team at Gutter Supply.

How many Copper Gutter Hanger Shanks do I need for my gutter system?

The number of Copper Gutter Hanger Shanks needed for your gutter system depends on a number of things like the length of your gutters and the spacing recommendations. As a general rule, hangers should be spaced approximately 24 to 36 inches apart. Measure the length of your gutters and divide by the recommended spacing to determine the number of hangers required.
